_______________________________

Rolf Clayton studied Chemical Engineering at University College London (UCL) in the 1960s followed by 3 years research at UCL into ion exchange.

He joined the Permutit company in 1966 where he designed and sold water treatment plant including ion exchange, drinking water treatment and wastewater treatment plants of all kinds.

After 3 years in Permutit's overseas sales department he joined their R&D Department where he set up a small section with the purpose of developing a continuous ion exchange process. This project succeeded and produced a patent, a few technical papers and a full-scale prototype continuous ion exchange softener at Watford Water Treatment Works.

He then joined Kellogg International, a leading petrochemical contractor, in the early 1970s where he worked in the off-sites department on the design and specification of special equipment and safety systems for ammonia plants and oil refineries.

In 1972 he joined Degrémont Laing Ltd in their Sales & Design department where he designed and sold water treatment plant of all kinds from ion exchange throught to sewage treatment plant. In 1974 he became the manager of their Technical Sales Department.

In 1976 he joined Davy Bamag, the water treatment arm of the late lamented Davy Group of Companies, where he eventually became Marketing Director of Davy Bamag GmbH in Butzbach and Managing Director of Davy Bamag Ltd in London. During this period he became interested in the Australian Sirofloc Process and obtained the European licence for Davy.

He joined the Water Research Centre (WRc) in 1982 and became the Director of WRCs Process Engineering Laboratory in Stevenage. The Stevenage Laboratory had many notable achievements during his period as Director including the development of the Water Industry's first Expert System, sludge thickening technology which is now widely used throughout the UK, the first computer-based sewage treatment model used in the UK, and jointly with Yorkshire Water and Davy the Stevenage Laboratory developed the Sirofloc Process to the point where there are a number of full-scale plants in the UK and the process is regarded as one of the most interesting and useful developments in drinking water treatment in the last 50 years.

He left the Water Research Centre in 1988 to set up Crowther Clayton Associates where he continues to work with new technology and also with many of the water companies and other leading businesses in the UK and overseas, eg ICI, National Power, Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, South West Water, Melbourne Water (Australia) etc. (see client list for a more comprehensive listing).

He has also undertaken a considerable amount of legal work acting as expert adviser and Expert Witness in a variety of technical cases on water and wastewater treatment plant contracting and environmental protection involving proceedings in the Crown Court, the High Court, arbitration and the ICC of Arbitration. He has undertaken a course on working as Single Joint Expert in accordance with the new CPR of April 1999 and is also a qualified Mediator and thus able to help with dispute resolution, especially in technical/engineering cases.
